Our Story

Hello! My name is Julie McCuiston, and I am the founding president of the Sun City Summerlin Rainbow Club. My husband and I moved here from Lahaina, Maui, in 2009, and we have enjoyed many of the opportunities afforded by the Sun City Summerlin community. The summer of 2023, my husband and I had a rainbow flag flying at our home on High Range drive. Sadly, we received a letter from the Community Standards office to remove the flag within 5 days. We complied, but I appealed that decision to the Community Standards committee and waited for a final decision. We were so disappointed when we received a letter check-marked that our rainbow flag was not allowed, with absolutely no explanation as to why. Several days later, a reporter from Sun City Living publication showed up at our door and asked to do an interview and photo regarding the Rainbow flag decision. The article was very fair, in my opinion. My big concern was that the decision of the Community Standards in that article might make our LGBTQ+ folks and their friends feel unwelcome here. That led me to gauge an interest in a Rainbow Club in Sun City Summerlin. SC Anthem and Alliance already had clubs that supported their LGBTQ+ community. After researching other Sun City/Del Webb community clubs in Nevada/California/Arizona, I discovered that almost every one of them have similar clubs with the same mission. It became obvious to us that we needed to make that happen here. As parents of a gay son and his husband, and a wide circle of friends in the LGBTQ community, and our friends in Sun City Summerlin, we knew the support was here. And we were right! There were so many community members who helped to make this happen, and we know we could have have achieved this without them. Our wonderful members have become an important part of our lives, and it truly gives me joy to see the friendships that have developed in our club. I know many who have now found forever friends in our club. What a gift that is! So if anyone is interested in a club that supports and embraces diversity, and particularly our LGBTQ community, please sign up and join us. You will meet many delightful people who share the purpose of making all our lives richer. I have one more ask….. Please spread the word to your friends here in Sun City Summerlin. I can promise one thing: You will be welcome, and we will have fun!
